HOOKED

Fictionalizing an original story as martyrdom, the single-screen video installation Hooked combines essay and fiction film elements, video game excerpts and science visualizations. The narrative of the video revolves around bits of information about Daniel P. Dukes, who in 1999 was found dead in a killer whale’s tank at SeaWorld Orlando. Two years before the same man was arrested for braking into the home of the game designer Richard Garriott, who after the incident stated that Dukes possibly got stuck in the fantasy world of ULTIMA, a computer role-playing game Garriott designed and which features his alter ego Lord British. Taking Garriott’s selfpromoting statement literally Hooked draws realistic connections between ULTIMA and Dukes’ journey to Orlando.
