The Scream is part of the series Monarch Men & Monsters, which translates signs and symbols into neon installations. Created in 2016, this work appropriates the Ghostface mask, originally designed as a Halloween costume before gaining notoriety through the ironic horror film Scream (1996). The Ghostface itself was inspiered. and references Edvard Munch’s iconic painting The Scream.
In the film, Ghostface is used by multiple characters to commit a series of murders—the constant shift in identity adds repeated elements of surprise. Ghostface embodies a self-aware, highly ambivalent persona that oscillates between absurdity and brutality—now regarded as a true innovation within the horror genre. Scream was not only a major commercial success but also inspired several real-world acts of violence.
